Things to Do in Budva, Montenegro: Beaches & Day Trips
From lively beaches and nightlife to historic streets, open-air theatre and peaceful coastal escapes, Budva can be much more than just a summer party destination.
The famous Dancer of Budva statue overlooking the Adriatic Sea, with Budva Old Town and the mountains of Montenegro in the background.
Budva is one of those places where you can create a completely different holiday depending on what you are looking for.
You can spend the day surrounded by music, beach bars and young travellers on Slovenska Beach, explore centuries-old streets and historic fortifications in the Old Town, find quieter corners around Mogren, or use Budva as a base for exploring some of the most beautiful places along the Montenegrin coast.
That is what I personally like most about Budva: you do not have to choose just one type of holiday.
Whether you are travelling with friends for a summer festival, planning an active beach holiday, travelling with family, enjoying a romantic coastal escape or simply looking for a convenient base for day trips, Budva offers very different experiences within one destination.
I have visited several places from Budva myself, including Sveti Stefan and Dubrovnik, and I also discovered that even a busy summer destination can offer surprisingly peaceful moments — especially once you step away from the busiest parts of the city.
Why Budva Is a Great Base for Exploring Montenegro
One of the biggest advantages of Budva is its location and transport connections.
You can arrive by car, travel by bus from many cities across Montenegro, or use one of the many international bus connections. If you are flying, Tivat Airport is relatively close to Budva, making it a convenient arrival point before continuing by taxi or another transfer option.
✈️ Flying to Montenegro? If you are arriving at Tivat Airport, booking your airport transfer in advance can make the journey to Budva much easier — especially if you are travelling with luggage, family or a group.
➡️ Book a private transfer from Tivat Airport to Budva here.
📱 Travel tip: If you are visiting Montenegro from abroad, having mobile data can make travelling around the coast much easier — especially when you are using maps, checking bus schedules, finding your accommodation or booking activities.
➡️ Get a Montenegro eSIM before your trip here.
🛡️ Travel insurance tip: Before travelling to Montenegro, it is worth arranging travel insurance for your trip. With EKTA, you can choose your destination, enter your travel dates and select the insurance plan that best suits your trip.

Once you are based in Budva, you can easily combine your beach holiday with day trips and shorter excursions.
For me, Budva is not just a destination — it can be the centre of a Montenegro itinerary.
From here, you can explore:
🌿 peaceful Sveti Stefan
👨👩👧 family-friendly Petrovac
🌊 other parts of the Montenegrin coast
🇭🇷 and even take a memorable day trip towards Dubrovnik
This makes Budva particularly useful for travellers who do not want to change accommodation every day.
🚗 Planning to explore more of Montenegro? Renting a car can give you much more flexibility to visit coastal towns, scenic viewpoints and places that are harder to reach by public transport — especially if Budva is your base.

Where to Stay in Budva
One of the things I like about Budva is that you can find accommodation for different budgets and travel styles.
For travellers who prefer traditional hotels, Hotel Slovenska Plaža is one of the best-known and most recognisable hotels in Budva and a convenient choice for travellers who want to stay close to the beach and the city's lively atmosphere.
For a completely different setting, Avala Resort & Villas is located next to Budva's Old Town, making it particularly interesting for travellers who want historic surroundings, sea views and easy access to the beach.
And if you are looking for a more luxurious stay, Merit Starlit Hotel & Residences is a modern five-star option with a particularly attractive central location close to both the beach and Budva's Old Town.
However, I would not limit your accommodation search to hotels.
Budva also has plenty of private apartments, holiday homes and villas, including larger properties suitable for families and groups of friends. This gives travellers much more flexibility when choosing where to stay.
A couple may prefer a small apartment close to the Old Town, while families and groups travelling together may appreciate the extra space of a larger holiday home or villa. This can be particularly practical for a festival weekend, a nightlife trip or a longer summer holiday, especially when you want to spend time together rather than book several separate hotel rooms.
If you are travelling with family or friends, a private holiday home or villa can give you more space and flexibility than a traditional hotel. You can browse holiday homes and villas in and around Budva here:

Budva Beaches: Choose Your Atmosphere
One of the most interesting things about Budva is that different parts of the city can feel completely different.
Slovenska Beach: Lively, Social and Full of Activity
If you enjoy a lively summer atmosphere, Slovenska Beach is one of the best places to experience the energy of Budva.
Slovenska Beach offers a completely different view of Budva — lively summer days by the Adriatic, with Budva Old Town visible in the distance.
During the summer, this popular beach attracts younger travellers and visitors looking for entertainment, beach bars, music, water sports and a social atmosphere.
If your ideal summer day includes swimming, music, meeting other travellers and plenty of restaurants and activities nearby, Slovenska Beach is likely to be a good choice.
Old Town and Mogren: A Different Side of Budva
If Slovenska Beach represents Budva's lively side, the Old Town and the area towards Mogren offer a completely different atmosphere.
The Old Town feels more historic and, even during the day, can offer a calmer experience away from the busiest beach areas.
Here, the experience is not only about swimming.
It is about walking through narrow stone streets, discovering churches, looking at the historic walls and finding beautiful corners for photography.
The coastline around this part of Budva also offers beautiful rocky scenery, while Mogren is a good choice for travellers looking for a more scenic coastal experience.

📸 For photography lovers, this is one of my favourite sides of Budva. The combination of old stone walls, the Adriatic Sea and rocky coastal scenery creates some beautiful places for photos.
Things to Do in Budva Beyond the Beach
🛶 See Budva From the Water
If you enjoy active experiences, exploring the Budva coastline by kayak or stand-up paddle board is a completely different way to see the city. You can paddle along the coast, discover coastal caves and enjoy views of Budva from the Adriatic Sea.

Escape the Crowds on a Private Boat 🚤
For a more exclusive way to explore the Budva Riviera, a private boat tour allows you to enjoy the coast at your own pace. You can explore hidden caves, stop for swimming in beautiful bays and enjoy panoramic views of Budva from the sea — with the added bonus of drone and Insta360 photos and videos to capture the experience.

Explore Budva Old Town and the Citadel
Budva's Old Town is one of the places you should not rush through. Take your time and wander through its narrow stone streets, where small shops, cafés and hidden corners create the feeling of walking through a little Mediterranean maze. Look up at the old stone buildings, explore the tiny alleyways, stop for a coffee and simply enjoy the atmosphere of this historic part of the city.
Getting lost in the narrow stone streets of Budva Old Town.
One of the main places to visit is the Budva Citadel.
I visited the Citadel myself and have several photos from my visit, so this will definitely be one of the places I will personally recommend in this guide.
The Citadel is part of Budva's historic fortifications and offers a different perspective of the Old Town and the Adriatic Sea.
A view over Budva Old Town, the marina and the surrounding mountains from the Citadel.
For me, places like this are one of the reasons why Budva should not be seen only as a beach and nightlife destination.
Budva Is Not Only About Nightlife: Discover Grad Teatar
One thing I almost forgot about when thinking about Budva was its cultural side.
During the summer, the historic Old Town becomes a setting for the Grad Teatar (Theatre City) Festival.
Performances and cultural events take place in historic surroundings, and one of the most atmospheric locations is the open-air stage Between the Churches, located close to the churches and the Citadel.
Imagine watching an evening performance surrounded by historic stone walls.
🎭⛪🌊
That is a completely different side of Budva.
The open-air stage “Between the Churches” in Budva's Old Town, where historic surroundings become part of the Grad Teatar Festival experience.
The festival has brought theatre, music and literary events to Budva for decades, proving that the city can offer much more than clubs and beach parties.
🎭 Did You Know?
Grad Teatar was founded in 1987 and has spent decades transforming Budva's historic streets, squares, churches and fortifications into open-air cultural stages.
Recent programmes have included theatre, dance, music and literary events, with artists from across the region taking part.
If you are visiting Budva during the summer, it is worth checking the official Grad Teatar programme — you may find a theatre performance, concert, literary evening, exhibition or another cultural event taking place in one of the city's historic settings.

Adventure Experiences in Budva
My Jet Ski Experience in Budva
Riding a jet ski along the Budva coast was one of those moments when the sea, the speed and the view came together perfectly. With Slovenska Beach and the mountains behind us, it was an experience I’ll definitely remember. 🛵🌊
If you are looking for something more adventurous, I would definitely put jet skiing on your Budva itinerary.
I tried it myself, and my 30-minute ride on the open sea was one of those experiences that made me feel completely free.
I was riding my own jet ski, choosing my direction and adjusting the speed to what felt comfortable for me.
Of course, the activity was organised with instructor supervision, but I still loved the feeling of having my own space and enjoying the open Adriatic Sea.
For me, it was not only about speed.
It was about the combination of:
freedom
adrenaline
open sea
beautiful coastal views
and doing something completely different from simply lying on the beach.

You fly together with a certified pilot, making it an exciting option even for travellers trying paragliding for the first time.

Shopping, Food and Everything You May Need
Budva is also very convenient from a practical point of view.
You can find almost everything you may need during your stay.
There is:
a local market
shopping facilities, including TQ Plaza
many shops in the surrounding streets
ATMs
pharmacies
restaurants
souvenir shops
fast food
modern shops
and plenty of places along the promenade
There is also city parking, which can be useful if you are exploring Montenegro by car.
This is another reason why I think Budva works well as a travel base.
You can spend the day exploring another destination and still return to a place where restaurants, shops and other practical services are easily available.
🌴 Evening Walk in Budva: When the Palms Light Up
After a day at the beach, exploring the Old Town or simply walking along the coast, I love taking an evening stroll through the more modern part of the city.
One of the places that caught my attention was the promenade around TQ Plaza, where palm trees, cafés, restaurants and hotel lights create a completely different atmosphere from the daytime beach scene.
An evening walk around TQ Plaza — palm trees, cafés and warm lights give Budva a completely different atmosphere after sunset.
This is the kind of walk where you don't really need a plan.
You can stop for a drink, browse the shops, sit down for dinner or simply keep walking and watch Budva come alive after dark.
And if you have spent the whole day swimming and sightseeing, this is probably exactly what you need: no itinerary, no sightseeing checklist — just a Mediterranean evening walk. 🌴✨
The area around TQ Plaza also makes a practical stop if you need shopping, restaurants or other everyday facilities during your stay.
For me, this is another little reminder that Budva is not only about the beach.
Sometimes the best part of the evening is simply walking through the city when the palm trees and hotel lights come on.
🍽️ Where to Eat in Budva: Zaytoun Restaurant by Merit
And then there was Zaytoun Restaurant by Merit.
I wasn't actually planning a restaurant review that evening — but sometimes travelling has a funny way of handing you something worth photographing.
Located at Slovenska Obala 11, next to Merit Starlit Hotel & Residences, Zaytoun offers a more sophisticated dining experience with Middle Eastern and Mesopotamian influences. The restaurant's own description focuses on mezze, rich main dishes and desserts inspired by the culinary traditions of Mesopotamia.
Zaytoun Restaurant by Merit in Budva — a stylish evening setting with distinctive red tables and a warm, modern atmosphere.
The menu is quite different from the usual Montenegro seaside restaurant selection.
You can find dishes such as hummus, tabbouleh, fattoush, muhammara, shakshuka and other mezze, followed by Turkish and Middle Eastern-style grilled dishes including shish taouk, Adana kebab, lamb kebab, kofta and mixed grill. There is also a surprisingly tempting dessert selection, including baklava, kazandibi, tres leches and tahini soufflé.
Prices put it more in the mid-to-upscale dining category rather than a quick beach meal. For example, the currently listed menu shows mezze mostly around €5–€11, kebabs and grilled dishes from roughly €16 upwards, with the Zaytoun Mixed Grill listed at €24.
And apparently I'm not the only person who noticed the place. 😄
Recent travellers have particularly praised the food, presentation, atmosphere and attentive service, while several reviews mention generous portions and a comfortable, stylish terrace. One September 2026 review specifically praised the Adana kebab, beef shashlik and even the shisha.
Another colourful corner of Zaytoun Restaurant by Merit — yellow tables, warm lighting and a relaxed evening atmosphere in the heart of Budva.
Should you put Zaytoun in your Budva itinerary?
If you are looking for a more elegant dinner rather than another casual meal by the beach, Zaytoun is an interesting option to consider.
It is particularly suitable for an evening when you want to dress up a little, sit somewhere comfortable and try something different from the standard Adriatic seafood-and-pizza routine.
Even the smallest details caught my eye - including some of the playful interior details that I simply had to photograph.

Nightlife and Events in Budva
Sea Dance Festival
If you want to combine a day at the beach with a night of dancing to international music stars, Sea Dance is the kind of event that can completely change your Budva experience.
Imagine spending the afternoon swimming in the Adriatic, relaxing on Bečići Beach or exploring the coast — and then, as the sun goes down, finding yourself surrounded by thousands of music lovers from around the world, with the sea just a few steps away. 🌊🎶
That is what makes a festival trip to Budva different. You don't have to choose between a beach holiday and a major music festival — you can have both.
The 2026 edition brought Sea Dance back to the Budva area after a four-year break. Over three festival nights, the event attracted around 93,000 visitors from more than 100 countries across six continents, with international artists including Charlotte de Witte, HUGEL, John Newman, Enrico Sangiuliano, Marcel Dettmann and Boris Brejcha taking the stage.
For me, this is one of the best examples of how different a Budva holiday can feel depending on when you visit. During the day, you can swim, enjoy the beach, take a boat trip or explore the coast — and at night, join an international crowd dancing beside the Adriatic. 🌅🌍
If you are travelling with friends, this can turn a regular summer getaway into something much more memorable. You can combine the festival with beaches, water activities, boat trips, nightlife and day trips along the Montenegrin coast, rather than spending your entire trip inside a festival venue.
➡️ Planning a future festival trip to Budva? Check the official Sea Dance website and Budva Tourism website for the latest festival dates, programme and announcements before booking your trip.
🎭 International Carnival in Budva
If you want to see a completely different side of Budva — and perhaps go home with a holiday photo you could never get on an ordinary beach day — plan your visit around the International Carnival in May.
Imagine walking through the streets of Budva and suddenly finding yourself surrounded by masked performers, colourful costumes, music and dancing, with the historic walls of the Old Town providing the backdrop. 🎭📸
The 2026 carnival brought more than 2,000 masked participants and around 80 carnival groups to Budva, turning the city into one big open-air celebration.
And this is where it gets really interesting for travellers.
The carnival is not simply one parade that you watch from the side. The traditional Abrum is part of the experience — masked groups accompanied by music move through the streets and invite locals and visitors to join the celebration. In 2026, the Abrum travelled along the Budva Riviera, including Petrovac, Pržno, Sveti Stefan, Rafailovići and Bečići, before the celebrations continued in Budva's Old Town.
So, if you fancy a holiday photo with a spectacular carnival costume, a masked performer or a colourful international group in the background, this is the kind of event where you should definitely keep your camera ready. 😂📸
And there is another reason I like this event: you don't have to be a serious carnival fan to enjoy it. You can spend the day exploring the Old Town, walk along the Adriatic, stop for coffee or dinner, and then find yourself in the middle of music, dancing and carnival performances.
The International Carnival is also a great reason to visit Budva before the main summer season begins — when the weather is pleasant, the Adriatic is already calling, and the city has a completely different energy from July and August.
➡️ Planning your trip around the carnival? Check the official Budva Tourism website for the latest dates, programme, participating groups and exact parade schedule before you book.
Top Hill
If you want to experience Budva at full volume, Top Hill is one of the names you will come across.
Perched high above the city, this open-air nightclub turns a summer night into a completely different experience. Imagine looking down over the lights of Budva and the Adriatic, while music, dancing and a huge crowd take over the hill around you. 🌃🎶
Top Hill is known for its large open-air setting, DJs, live performances and spectacular views over the Budva Riviera. It is the kind of place to choose when you are not looking for a quiet drink — you want music, dancing and a night that can continue well into the early morning.
One detail that comes up in visitor reviews is that the atmosphere tends to build later in the night, so don't necessarily expect the full party to be happening as soon as the doors open. Some visitors specifically recommend checking which DJ or performer is appearing that night before deciding when to go.
And that is probably the best way to approach Top Hill: check the programme first and choose the night that matches your taste in music. The experience can vary considerably depending on the event.
If you are travelling with friends and want to experience one of Budva's biggest summer nightlife venues, Top Hill could be the night you remember from your trip. 🪩🌙

Best Day Trips from Budva
One of my favourite reasons to stay in Budva is the possibility of exploring other places without constantly changing accommodation.
Sveti Stefan: A Peaceful Escape from the Crowds
I visited Sveti Stefan from Budva, and for me it felt like a completely different experience.
A Short Trip to Sveti Stefan
One of the most iconic places to visit near Budva is Sveti Stefan, a tiny fortified island connected to the mainland by a narrow causeway. With its stone houses, terracotta roofs and dramatic position above the Adriatic, it is one of those views that instantly feels like Montenegro.
Even if you are not staying at the resort, it is worth making a short trip from Budva just to see Sveti Stefan from the surrounding viewpoints and coastline. The contrast between the old stone village, deep blue sea and rugged rocks makes it one of the most photogenic spots on the Montenegrin coast.
Miločer Beach near Sveti Stefan, Montenegro — a peaceful coastal escape with spectacular mountain views.
📸 This was my view of Sveti Stefan — sitting on the rocks and simply taking in the scenery.
Sveti Stefan, Montenegro — one of the most iconic views near Budva.
A visit to Sveti Stefan works especially well as a short half-day trip from Budva, and you can easily combine it with a stop at Miločer or one of the nearby beaches.
Compared with the busier atmosphere of Budva, Sveti Stefan offers a calmer environment and is a wonderful place to slow down and simply enjoy the scenery.
If you want to take a break from crowds, this is definitely one of the places I would recommend.
Petrovac: A Relaxed Day Trip for Families
Petrovac is another place I would recommend considering when staying in Budva.
It has a calmer atmosphere and is a good choice for:
families
travellers looking for a quieter day
couples
anyone who wants a break from Budva's busy summer atmosphere.
Petrovac, Montenegro — a peaceful coastal escape with calm Adriatic waters and the historic waterfront in the background.
This is the kind of place where you can slow down and enjoy a more relaxed coastal day.

A Day Trip from Budva to Dubrovnik
One of my most memorable trips from Budva was visiting Dubrovnik.
It is an excellent example of why Budva can work as a base for bigger adventures. I have already written a detailed guide about this experience, including the journey and what I saw during the trip.

Budva for Every Type of Traveller
The more I think about my time in Budva, the more I realise that its biggest advantage is variety.
🎧 Festival lovers and groups of friends can enjoy music, nightlife and summer events.
🏖️ Beach lovers can choose between the lively atmosphere of Slovenska Beach and quieter coastal escapes.
🏰 History and photography lovers can explore Budva Old Town, the Citadel and Mogren.
🌊 Active travellers can enjoy water activities and adventure experiences, while families and couples can explore quieter places such as Petrovac and Sveti Stefan.
🇭🇷 And if you want to turn your holiday into a bigger adventure, Budva can also be a convenient base for a day trip towards Dubrovnik.
With different accommodation options, activities and experiences, Budva can work for different travel styles and budgets as well.
Is Budva Worth Visiting?
Yes — especially if you do not want to spend your entire holiday doing just one thing.
Budva can be lively, historic, adventurous or peaceful depending on where you go and how you choose to spend your time.
For me, that is what makes it such a useful destination.
You can spend one morning exploring historic streets, the afternoon on the beach, try jet skiing on the open sea, watch an outdoor performance in the Old Town and then take a peaceful walk beside the Adriatic in the evening.
And the next day, you can explore somewhere completely different.
That is why I see Budva not only as a destination, but as a centre for exploring this beautiful part of Montenegro.
